C.A.N. Art Handworks was founded by Carlos Nielbock, an award-winning Master Craftsman who came to Detroit from Germany as a young apprentice with deep training in the European guild tradition. Inspired by the city’s rich industrial heritage and cultural resilience, Carlos built a studio that would not only restore historic architectural treasures—but also reimagine what metalwork could mean for the future.
Since the 1984, C.A.N. Art Handworks has been a cornerstone of Detroit’s preservation and design community, known for its expert craftsmanship in restoring sculptures, monuments, facades, and ornamental metalwork. The studio has contributed to some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the Spirit of Detroit, Gateway to Freedom Memorial, and custom works for museums, public parks, and historic buildings.
