The Detroit Handwerkskammer is a cohort-based skilled trades training academy at C.A.N. Art Handworks in Detroit, led by master metalsmith Carlos Nielbock. Inspired by the German Handwerkskammer model, this program integrates apprenticeship-based learning, public commissions, certification, and cultural heritage to train a new generation of artisans. The initiative preserves traditional craftsmanship while preparing students for sustainable careers in metalsmithing, public art, restoration, and entrepreneurial production.
Modeled after the esteemed German Handwerkskammern, this program applies their time-tested approach to:
Apprenticeship + Theoretical Instruction
Master-Apprentice Knowledge Transfer
Certification and Skill Recognition
Economic and Civic Integration
Entrepreneurial Development
Detroit Handwerkskammer adapts these principles to Detroit’s unique industrial heritage and African-American craft legacies.
